Do you have somewhere to go that is your Happy Place? I've had mine since I was 15: Silver Lake State Park in Michigan.
Over the 4th of July weekend we took a day-trip to Lake Michigan. It all starts with a 1.5 mile hike across the dunes, where once you get past the first peak there is nothing but sand in every direction...
I'm always surprised to see life persist in an environment like this. This stand of trees is buried in sand to their very tops, but they still have leaves - they're not giving up!
I'm not exactly in my best shape, so I was afraid I wouldn't make it across the dunes. It's been seven years since I've climbed them. I was thrilled to find that I could still do it; the problem was that the sand was SO. HOT. on the bottom of my feet. You can't climb dunes in sandals, and who wants sneakers full of sand? I prefer to do it barefoot, but wow did that hurt for a while.
We were rewarded for our efforts with a nearly-empty beach on Lake Michigan:
We walked out into the lake to cool our feet, and relaxed on the sand to the sound of the waves. It was 83 degrees F and breezy - basically it was heaven.
Of course, we still had the walk back across the dunes, which I think are easier after some time on the beach. We immediately went out for some ice cream and ice water, then it was on our way to the best part of the trip: Little Sable Point Light House.
The lighthouse is on the dune system, and to me it is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. I love to sit perched on a dune, watching the sun go down. This is where my spirit is renewed, and I find a sense of peace again. This is my happy place.
Where is your "happy place"?
